Steigerwald Lake Refuge to Implement Native Vegetation Planting
November 2011-March 2012
After last year's highly successful planting of over 8,000 native trees and shrubs, Refuge volunteer and Lower Columbia River Estuary Partnership team leaders will be leading volunteers to continue planting along Gibbons Creek. Native trees and shrubs to be planted include cottonwood, willow, dogwood, spirea (hardhack), ninebark, twinberry, and wild rose. These plants will continue our efforts to provide shade to the creek (salmon habitat), and feeding/nesting places for birds and other wildlife.
Volunteers (all ages, but those under 18 must be come with at one of their parents) are invited to join us from 9 a.m. (arrive a bit early, please) to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays throughout the winter (the first three in November, the first 2 in December, and all Saturdays in January, February, and March). We will be putting 3,200 plants in the ground this year, expanding our planting south of the creek to the east. Please be at the Gibbons Creek Wildlife Art trailhead along Washington SR 14 east of Washougal shortly before 9 a.m. Weather can be challenging during the winter, so plan on wearing boots (rubber if you have them), gloves, warm clothing (raingear most of the time) and a hat. For additional information, please visit our calendar page, where you can get more details for a particular workday. We also have a nifty flier that you can print and use to recruit your friends!
